Campaign History

31

On an early mission, a group of Adventurers once again bumped into some of the creatures (who all look remarkably similar) who mine the Micro-wishes. Once again a number of games were offered and the party came away with more of the gemstones!

32

Even as this was happening, a small fleet set out from its gathering point at Eilindainian Island to intercept and delay (any chance of victory was already realised as impossible) the incoming Sonnats Gil fleet. As darkness rolled in, the brave souls who had taken our salvation upon themselves had already gone aboard ship and set off for the Island, revealed by Anskiere (seneschal to Ashurok) to have a Portal connecting to the mainland (similar in design to the one in Region). Before dark it was announced that the 42 ships of the Alliance had engaged the 147 ships of the Sonnats Gil fleet. Although the details of the battle are unrecorded, as there were no survivors, it is known that the Alliance fleet managed to destroy 11 of the Gil fleet including two of their main objectives, heavy transports which were thought to hold as many as 500 Gil Stormtroopers and other forces each.

33

The group who had set out to take the components of the Maelstrom to Hranek Noll (Frost/Frozen Heart) Keep, in the far north of the Firith in Evermore, found that a large contingent of Gil Troops had passed from their objective to the Archipelago and were preparing to strike from behind. Luckily, Chengi (the Gil Lieutenant) had prepared his forces badly and therefore the three hundred troops, scattered into different groups, were easily destroyed variously by the party and then by a large horde of Dozi. The Party, having got behind the Dozi, passed through the portal to find Anskiere waiting for them with some of the weird Mynid Creatures who serve Ashurok. The Alien Seneschal offered the party a quick route through enemy lines.

34

Underground, having accompanied Anskiere into deep Ice Caverns, the party were set upon by giant creatures later titled Frost Wights for their relation to Cave Wights! The party fought wildly and managed by some miraculous means to escape the ambush free of casualties, though J-D's timely intervention was all that had saved Rothan of Edhaal, and Atlantae and Ordos had saved Trent Took by a whisker. Eventually the party found mechanical automatons that served Ashurok as unsleeping guardians to his mighty keep, and were then led before the out-of-grace Servant of the Enemy.

35

Ashurok, perhaps showing something of his truer nature, then bade the party initialise the Maelstrom, which could be moved only once every hundred years - but only if they could gain for him Etrigan's Head, an Artefact of unknown power. Also, he warned that should they not have from Groa the Eye of the Storm then all inside the Maestrom's area would die! Anskiere revealed that the items which they desired lay even further North in a small temperate valley known simply as the End of the World, or the Last Kingdom. There a strange old witch more ancient than the Sun held the Head.

36

Behind Ashurok, the party espied the frozen form of Gareth Shequi, and it was Peter Villa who, seeing his brother Knight and former Commander, inquired of fallen Ashurok why the former Magistar of the Amoriath was here. His reply was brief: when the Amoriath had gone to injunct the Embodiments during the wall conflict, they had also rendered themselves useless and vulnerable. Ashurok, watching, had chosen to whisk away Shequi for a bargain he had in mind for the future and he also revealed that Rovien of Catspaw had grabbed and whisked away John Lambert. When asked of Raislari, he informed them they would find that fact out in good time! The company, not wishing to argue with Ashurok in his own stronghold and surrounded by his guards and Minions, agreed. Along with the party would go Cai of the Erith-Thane, sent by Hanuman Able to resummon his Helknights (or so they said at first). Setting out once again northwards, they entered further ice tunnels beneath the keep, but now found that Sonnats Gil had followed them there. Entering a huge open cavern, the party were confronted by Ischcade, the former Sorceress, announcing she had joined the Khalan Kor and had feasted on the Soul of Zheer Stonehand after his abduction by that malicious order of wizards in service to the Gil! Tristran, having supped of a potion of flying, began to incant an excorcism just as Ischade summoned up three Horned Abominations, which lunged into the ground party. As the Exorcism fired and Ischade's power was halved by its soul-ripping effects, she summoned Maegdur, the Dread Immortal Master of the Khalan Kor, said to have been born in the third age of the world. After one group of Abominations Ishcade summoned another, and the party began to suffer greatly. In the battle Rothan of Edhaal, Raven Dragonsbane of Rovac, James of Atlantis and other Warriors gave their lives. Then Maegdur arrived and all was thought lost, but even as the Arch-mage began to incant, a voice came chanting out of the depths of the cavern. Har of the Fianrada came and with swift reason drove Maegdur away. The party, ever grateful, requested he accompany them and he revealed that in fact that was why he had come. He had also brought Grayfalas, another renegade Fianrada famed for her healing. Between them and Druscarin and Tristran, the rest of the company were raised up from their premature graves.

37

Along the way the party picked up another accomplice whom Har referred to as Gravendeath.

38

As the Company saw the glow of light from behind, they heard the fearful howls of Frost Wights coming on fast. The party could not reach the now visible End of the World Valley before being overtaken and so Ordos Warmaster of House Sumunai elected to stay behind - a certain death indeed! A brief argument ensued, but finally even Sekai saw the logic in his bodyguard and lifelong friend's sacrifice. Even as they came into the open lush greenland, out of the cold wastes behind they heard the battle.

39

Groa, an ancient crone, greeted them at the edge of the vale, but ordered Gravendeath and Har to remain without this blessed Oasis in the Ice; they complied. A number of days wheeled and passed and the party could not gain their answer from Groa, who took the form of a maiden by day and an ancient crone by evening. Finally Mook found one of the things they had come for - Etrigan's Head, which spoke to him from a dusty cupboard - and he then placed it in a sack. Growing impatient, fearing that the Gil had surely attacked their homelands and possibly won by now, the party, as they did each morning and evening, demanded of Groa the whereabouts of the Eye which would allow their people to remain safe with the boundaries of the Maelstrom. Groa simply asked whom was the most desperate, to which Mook said that he was - and so the Old Crone plucked out his eye before he could recoil and offered him a gem which she fashioned from it!

40

The party now had what they came for and so set out immediately back to Ashurok's keep. Having left the Last Kingdom, they came upon the body of Ordos, who seemed to have been dead for days. It was not only Sekai who was distraught, but then Har spoke briefly to Grayfalas, who admitted this was the destiny prescribed her and then placed her spirit into the fallen Warrior. Ordos arose and remembered something of his former self, but was now part Fianrada also. On the way, they were intercepted by the evil Thane Hugh Kelsey and some black Erith-Thane, who called upon Cai the Erith-Thane to join them as he had been briefed to do by Hanuman Able. Kelsey revealed that Able intended to thwart the Alliances plan's to raise the Maelstrom as he with his Erith-Thane Legions had designs on mopping up anything left after the Gil onslaught. Even as he spoke, Cai did what no Erith-Thane has ever done: breaking the Ban of Erith, he slew the two Thane with Kelsey. Even as Kelsey levelled his gun at Cai, Gravendeath, their enigmatic travelling companion, transformed into the true form of the Chameleon which pounced on its favoured prey: the life force of the immortal Thane such as Kelsey. A gurgled scream was the last testament to the evil Immortal's existence. The Company were now even further behind their time, and with an invitation to Cai to accompany them they prepared to make the final push to Hranek Noll. Cai declined, saying that he had broken the first directive of his race never to kill another and that he would return north to the Last Kingdom to find whatever peace he could!
