Campaign History

71

Even as the Alliance forces prepare to attack, others are undertaking to ensure an Alliance victory - even if that is not their primary motive. Ezekiel the 'Son of Hawley' Smoot, begins plans to reclaim his father's lost Empire. Hiring a large group of new Adventurers he despatches them to find an Assassin named Steel. Steel is said to once have rivalled Smoot, nearly half a century before, so the two Assassins held a contest. Whatever it was, Steel lost and went into a self-imposed exile. From all reports the group, having been duped by Steel into rescuing his wife from an unwanted suitor, gained his agreement to meet with Ezekiel in person. The Assassin's son is now armed to take back his father's Empire from the usurper Xxill.

72

Despite the pressures of war Adventurers still find time to earn a living, and this month was no exception. Two groups each journeyed to different worlds (other planes of existence), and both found a mirror reflection of our own beleaguered state in the forces of good on these worlds. One world was sorely oppressed by its own and fought some civil wars amongst Barons for and against their Prince. The other world had one side surrendering by handing over its leader for summary execution. One of the two has offered help if we can spare healers to train its people in these arts, which they sorely lack. The Order of Radiance has taken the matter in hand.

73

On Saturseve, Tasio of the House of Erevaal undertook the Death Test that marks the full coming of age of the men of Bëor. The Balrog, though, used a rune of pain and all but slew Tasio. In a rage Trin Truespear and Aglar of the House of Tuor, Gaunt Warlord of House Bëor and Stephen Belforet, Sorceror of that house, fell on the creature with a rage. When the creature fled back to Hel, they in battle lust followed - what happened in Hel is unknown, but none of the four has been seen since!

74

Later, a changed party from the one originally intended for the mission undertook to recruit the help of one of the last Dragons in the Realm, Krull Hrodvintnir. The group easily passed the Manticore's Talon Blockade, which is not yet fully in place. Also, Rovien is still accepting refugees from New Eilind, openly welcoming them to New Avmar. The group finally arrived at the Dragon Isle and came into Krull's resting-place. Once there the Dragon informed them of treachery amongst his own Dragon Knights: Malkin Black, a Captain of the Order of the Dragon, had stolen the Phoenix egg entrusted to Krull by Tomas Ennear the best part of a century ago. The party quickly came on Malkin's base, having had encounters with Weirdlings and a giant creature radiating Earth power. The battle was swift and more than a few in the group perished to the defenders. At the last Malkin opened a gate to Hel and fled through; with little time to spare, those that could followed.

Once through, they found themselves in Mia Muti and took some time to defend themselves from its 49 serpent inhabitants. Again some perished fighting. Malkin finally opened a gate to the halls of his patron Tiamat, who betrayed Malkin and made him stand against his pursuers. Malkin then produced a Darkside scroll, but Jenna of Cymier and Sgt. Bevarn of Kleet, along with a young warlock, slew him prior to his completion of the ritual. Now faced with Tiamat the party was saved by the timely appearance of the Earth Giant. Returning the Phoenix egg to Krull, he used its power to raise up those who had died on the quest.

75

The next day, the Pathfinders were successful in finding Jonathan Longbow and alleviating his curse (after some small debate).

Things fare as well as may, but all the while Rovien's forces secure their hold and push ever further towards absolute mastery. It is now likely that the Priest has gone to slay his Duke...

76

Early Autumn 5864.

The siege of Brebont continues for two more weeks. Each passing day the fighting becomes increasingly vicious: hundreds are killed on both sides, but with rune warriors blasting them by day and Drowh sneaking onto the battlements to cut throats at night, defending casualties quickly become unacceptable and one by one Alliance forces withdraw!

77

After the Elven Princes leave, so too do the Gardainians who chose not to side with Kyrie-Sumunai. Next go the Pirates and the majority of the Evermorian Adventurers in the town. Each day, Alex Winter, Princess Tallia and even Jon Blackswain make impassioned pleas not to flee the fight, but to no avail. Soon Darkendari troops of Venndark and Midigan leave, quickly followed by Edhaals and Kamarthians (not happy with enclosed fighting). Soon all that remains are Kleetians, Sumunai, Marnish and Ullratha; even the honourable Shinii withdraw the majority of their forces, leaving only suicide troops.

78

On day 12 after the commencement of the siege, the powder again runs out and the Marnish Cannons of Brebont are finally silenced. By the end of the day, the outer walls are breached and the defenders, now a few hundreds, are pushed back to the centre of town to snipe from hastily erected barricades. Casualties are atrocious with 30% of the fighting force falling in as may hours in the new position. Finally the defenders agree to surrender...

79

What happened next cannot be clearly related as none who have come home will divulge the full nature of what transpired that evening. Suffice to say that some other power, as yet unknown played its hand, and through winding passages free of the dreaded Drowh the Allies, including Tallia, Bevarn and Cumhal along with Mark D'Mass (cousin to Michael), managed to reach halfway across the Plains of Tsals before surfacing. Enraged, the Talon Troops raced across the Plain to capture their prey. An hour later near the foothills of Angenon, Alex Winters, the Ullratha and the survivors of the Eilindainian force were faced by the fastest of the Talons. Exhausted and out-numbered, the Allies scrambled wildly into the woodland for whatever cover they could find.

The pursuit continued into the heart of the wood. With each step, more allies were mown down by rune fire or back-biting blades. Tallia and Winter conferred and resolutely turned to stand and fight one last time, face-to-face with Rovien's hounds of war, but all were to be surprised...

80

Little did the Kleetians and Marnish know that the Sons of Edhaal and Spiritual Warriors of Edain had chosen to make a stand in this woodland after the pounding in Brebont. As scores of Manticore's Talon burst through the undergrowth to surround the friends, so from around them came the tall grim axemen of the woods and, flashing out of the ether, the projections of the Edain. Finally, to join the fray in their suited environment, came a hundred Pathfinders. The battle raged for an hour, still not an easy victory despite the surroundings. Eventually though, some few dozen Talon Legionnaires scrambled from the woods and, to the jeering of their enemies, limped back across Tsal plain towards Brebont.

A noble victory, but high in cost: only a handful of Kleetians, Marnish and Ullratha alive and a great many Edain and Edhaal lives shed for a killing of a little over 300 Legionnaires, bringing the total tally on the siege of Brebont to 1,100 (known dead) for Rovien's army and 7,600 Allied warriors and 1,800 civilians.
